East & West MoleseyA Dictionary of Local HistoryRowland G. M. Baker, 1972 |
Before the introduction of refrigerators ice for the big country houses was collected from frozen ponds in the winter and stored in underground pits. An ice-house built in the eighteenth century for East Molesey Park still survives in the garden of a house in Beauchamp Road. Originally in the middle of the Park, it was a brick lined well under a brick dome heaped over with earth for insulation. The well has since been filled in but the superstructure survives.
